What is Kojic Acid?

Kojic acid is a chelation agent produced by several species of fungi, especially Aspergillus oryza. Kojic acid is a by-product in the fermentation process of malting rice, for use in the manufacturing of sake.It is a mild inhibitor of the formation of Pigment in plant and animal tissues. Kojic acid is a melanin-specific inhibitor that, when it enters skin cells, can complex with copper ions in cells, alter the steric structure of tyrosinase, and prevent the activation of tyrosinase, thereby inhibiting the formation of melanin. Cosmetic Ingredients Kojic acid whitening active agent has better tyrosinase inhibition effect than other whitening active agents. It does not act on other biological enzymes in the cell, and has no toxic effect on the cells. At the same time, it can enter the intercellular substance to form intercellular Gelatin, which plays a role in retaining water and increasing skin elasticity. Function

(1) Kojic acid is a kind of specialized inhibitor for melanin. It can prevent the tyrosinase activity through synthesizing with copper ion in the cells after it enters skin cells. Kojic acid and its derivative has better inhibitory effect on tyrosinase than any other Skin Whitening agents.
