What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is used as a Food Additive and Sweetener substitute. Its European Union code number is E967. Xylitol is monosaccharide compound, which is gained by hydrolyzing plant fiber raw materials and then reduced to a linear polyol with 5 carbon atoms and 5 hydroxyl groups. It exist in bananas, strawberries, carrots, arbutus, onions, lettuce, cauliflower, spinach and mushrooms. Sweetness, calorific value of xylitol is similar to sucrose. It is a good substitute for patients of fasting sucrose. The metabolism of xylitol does not need insulin in the body and does not increase the level of blood sugar.
